AWS Elemental MediaConvert Professional tier prices in normalized minutes from $0.0120/min for the first 50K/mo (us-east-1), with AVC at 1x/2x/4x (SD/HD/4K) vs HEVC 2x/4x/8x vs AV1 3.5x/7x/14x multipliers. Google Cloud Transcoder API charges flat, codec-agnostic rates: $0.015 SD / $0.030 HD / $0.060 UHD per minute. Coconut (Paris, bootstrapped since 2006, 1,600+ customers) undercuts both at $0.0075/$0.015/$0.03. Qencode (LA, founded 2017) starts at $0.005/min SD, scaling to roughly $0.66-$0.99/min for 8K AV1 depending on preset. Mux Plus starts at $0.025/min for 720p with a 4x multiplier at 4K; Bitmovin publishes a $0.02/min SD base rate on a self-serve pay-as-you-go tier with public 2x HD / 4x 4K / 1.25x 2-pass multipliers — only its custom enterprise/volume pricing is quote-gated. Pick AWS MediaConvert or GCP Transcoder if you're already inside that cloud's pipeline and need SLA-backed uptime for enterprise OTT delivery. Pick Coconut or Qencode if you're under ~50K output-minutes/month — their flat per-resolution rates beat AWS's normalized-minute HEVC/AV1 multipliers by a wide margin at small scale. Don't default to Mux for pure batch transcoding: its per-minute price bakes in adaptive-bitrate ladder generation, so a 60-minute source can bill as 180-240 encoded minutes. Bitmovin actually publishes self-serve per-minute rates ($0.02/min SD base, 2x HD, 4x 4K, 1.25x for 2-pass, with 2,000 free minutes/month) — the sales-quote gate only applies to its custom enterprise/volume tier, so it's more comparison-shoppable than it gets credit for. Known weakness: List prices aren't apples-to-apples: codec multipliers (HEVC 2-8x, AV1 up to 14x over base AVC/SD) and multi-rendition ABR ladders mean the real per-hour bill often lands 3-20x above the headline SD rate — Qencode's own 8K AV1 top-tier rate (~$0.66-$0.99/min) runs over 100x its headline $0.005/min SD number, so 'starts at' pricing is close to useless for scoping a real bill on any of these pages.
