IGES

IGES (Initial Graphics Exchange Specification) is a neutral file format used for the digital exchange of computer-aided design (CAD) data between different CAD systems. It was developed in the late 1970s to enable interoperability by representing 2D and 3D geometric models, annotations, and other product data in a standardized way. Although largely superseded by newer formats, it remains in use for legacy systems and specific industry applications.

Also known as: Initial Graphics Exchange Specification, IGES format, IGES file, ANSI Y14.26M, IGES/PDES
🧊Why learn IGES?

Developers should learn IGES when working with legacy CAD systems, manufacturing software, or industries like aerospace and automotive that still rely on it for data exchange. It is useful for tasks involving CAD data conversion, interoperability testing, or maintaining compatibility with older engineering workflows where modern formats like STEP are not feasible.
