Islanding

Islanding is a condition in electrical power systems where a distributed generator, such as a solar panel or wind turbine, continues to power a local area even after the main grid power has been disconnected. This occurs when the generator's output matches the local load, creating an isolated 'island' of power. It poses safety risks for utility workers and can damage equipment if not properly managed.

Also known as: Power islanding, Electrical islanding, Microgrid islanding, Anti-islanding, Grid islanding
🧊Why learn Islanding?

Developers should understand islanding when working on smart grid systems, renewable energy integration, or microgrid control software to ensure safety and compliance with grid codes like IEEE 1547. It's critical for designing anti-islanding protection mechanisms in inverters and energy management systems to prevent unintended power islands during grid outages.
