Normative Ethics
Normative ethics is a branch of moral philosophy that focuses on establishing standards or norms for determining what actions are morally right or wrong, good or bad. It involves developing and evaluating ethical theories and principles to guide human behavior and decision-making. This field contrasts with metaethics (which analyzes the nature of ethics) and applied ethics (which applies ethical principles to specific situations).
Developers should learn normative ethics to make informed, principled decisions in areas like AI ethics, data privacy, software design, and workplace conduct, especially when building systems that impact users or society. It provides frameworks for addressing ethical dilemmas in technology, such as bias in algorithms, user consent, and sustainability, helping create more responsible and trustworthy products. This is particularly relevant for roles involving ethics committees, policy-making, or leadership in tech companies.
