Soft Lithography
Soft lithography is a set of microfabrication techniques that use elastomeric stamps, molds, or masks to pattern materials on surfaces, primarily at the microscale to nanoscale. It enables the creation of microstructures and devices without requiring expensive photolithographic equipment, making it accessible for rapid prototyping and research in fields like microfluidics, bioengineering, and flexible electronics. Common methods include microcontact printing, replica molding, and microtransfer molding.
Developers should learn soft lithography when working in microfluidics, lab-on-a-chip devices, or biomedical engineering, as it allows for cost-effective and flexible fabrication of micro-scale patterns and structures. It is particularly useful for prototyping in academic or small-scale industrial settings where traditional photolithography is too costly or complex, and for applications requiring biocompatible materials or curved surfaces.
