VPLS

VPLS (Virtual Private LAN Service) is a networking technology that extends Ethernet-based local area networks (LANs) across a service provider's MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) network, creating a virtualized Layer 2 broadcast domain. It enables geographically dispersed sites to communicate as if they were connected to the same physical LAN, supporting Ethernet frames and protocols like ARP and spanning tree. VPLS is commonly used in enterprise WANs, data center interconnects, and cloud services to provide scalable, secure connectivity.

🧊Why learn VPLS?

Developers should learn VPLS when working on network design, cloud infrastructure, or telecommunications projects that require seamless LAN extension over wide areas, such as connecting branch offices, data centers, or hybrid cloud environments. It's particularly useful for applications needing low-latency, high-bandwidth Layer 2 connectivity, like financial trading systems or real-time data replication, where traditional VPNs or leased lines are insufficient.
